Production nurseries

This dynamic, hands-on role oversees all aspects of nursery production, working closely with the Nursery Manager to plan, implement, and manage activities critical to the nursery’s success.

Key responsibilities include production planning, team leadership, reporting, and ensuring a safe, productive workplace.

You will play a pivotal role in coordinating production schedules to meet project delivery deadlines and support the Nursery Sales Manager in fulfilling the growing demand for our plants.

The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Plan weekly production for a team of eight propagation staff, working closely with the propagation team leader.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to ensure optimal performance and adherence to production schedules.
  • Oversee the weekly planning and delivery of propagation needs.
  • Work closely with the sales manager to ensure all sales requirements are met at the agreed timeframe and highlight issues as they arise.
  • Make sure propagation targets are being achieved.
  • Work with Nursery Manager to ensure the propagation team has the right staff balance and materials to achieve targets.
  • Maintain records of growing techniques and production to be used for future reviews to identify trends and to assist in planning.
  • Be aware of order dispatch dates, identify any growing issues or shortfalls as early as possible, work with nursery manager and propagation team leader to find solutions.

Stock Control

  • Oversee all inventory numbers and statuses across the entire nursery.
    Ensure stock quality is at an optimum level.
  • Work closely with the area supervisors to conduct regular stock status updates and stock takes to ensure all inventory is correct.
  • Conduct specific stock counts and manage stock allocations, including addressing shortages and substitutions prior to dispatch.
  • Identify growing issues early and collaborate with the nursery manager and propagation team leader for solutions.

Train and assist other team members:

  • Train new employees in growing techniques and processes.
  • Offer assistance (as required) to fellow team members; be approachable and available
  • Undertake formal, scheduled training and assistance as directed by the Nursery Manager

Nursery systems development

  • Consider and suggest system improvements to the Nursery Manager in order to undertake activities in more efficient ways, including production, grading and record keeping activities, tracking and fulfilling orders whilst not sacrificing on quality/customer service
  • Maintains a current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies.

Qualifications & experience

  • Qualifications and/or experience in Horticulture (Cert 4) or Production Management/Planning or similar or equivalent experience.
  • 2-3 years Commercial Nursery Production Management experience.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer packages, including, inventory management and Office 365. Experience with Evergreen Connect would be beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of product requirements and proven ability to deliver to deadlines.
  • Well versed in production procedures, process and should be should well versed in methods to optimise them with a results-driven and problem-solving attitude.
  • Experience with planning, coordination and implementation of a nursery maintenance program.
  • Excellent communication and written skills.
  • Experience in procedure development and implementation.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, with an aptitude for dealing with change
